DRPA May Bring Back EZ Pass Commuter Discounts

CAMDEN, N.J. (CBS) -- The Delaware River Port Authority may restore EZ Pass discounts to frequent users of its four bridges.

New Jersey state senate president Steve Sweeney first proposed the idea this week, under the premise that commuters deserve it.  He would like to see a one-dollar toll reduction -- from $5 to $4 -- for those who use the spans at least 18 times a month.

DRPA board vice chair Jeffrey Nash suggests the agency can, in fact, afford to bring back more and better discounts.

"There have been significant changes at the DRPA for the public's benefit-- reducing spending, tightening the budget -- and now we're in a strong financial position to explore options, possibly to reduce the tolls for frequent commuters, and to explore other discounts," he said.

Those other discounts may include bigger savings for senior citizens or maybe a discount on holiday travel.

All this is in the "maybe" stage at this point. The agency will spend the next few months looking into the whole idea.

The Delaware River Port Authority operates the Benjamin Franklin, Walt Whitman, Commodore Barry, and Betsy Ross bridges.
