Driver In Custody After Pedestrian Struck, Killed On Roosevelt Boulevard

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A 24-year-old man is in custody after a fatal accident, involving a pedestrian, took place on Roosevelt Boulevard on Thursday morning. Police say the accident took the life of a 53-year-old man.

Nicholas Schinella, of Mercer County, has been charged.

The incident took place around 11:19 a.m. on E. Roosevelt Boulevard near Southampton Road.

Authorities say Schinella was driving, heading south on Roosevelt Boulevard. Police say he was traveling at a high rate of speed and passed vehicles at a red light, while ignoring the signal.

Officials say he struck another car. They add that the impact of the crash sent Schinella's car driving over the car it hit before hitting the median and eventually the pedestrian.

Authorities say the driver of the vehicle that was struck was a 54-year-old man who suffered no injuries.

The 53-year-old was taken to Aria Torresdale Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 12:09 p.m.

Police say that Schinella is charged with homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence, involuntary manslaughter, causing death while not properly licensed and other offenses.
