Drexel University Encourages Employees To Stand Up For Their Health

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Research shows that sitting at a desk all day is bad for your health. Drexel University is offering a way for full-time employees to get out of their chairs.

Sitting at a desk all day has been linked to such issues as diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular disease, so moving around or standing up occasionally is a good thing. Victor Tringali, Executive Director of University Wellness at Drexel, says full-time employees are now being offered the chance to use a desk that lets them stand while working. It should keep workers healthier and cut down on medical costs.

"Within the first few hours we had 47 people from our employee population submit applications for the standing desk," Tringali says. "It seems that at least initially it's being well received and is popular."

Tringali says his department shares the cost of the desk with the worker's department to encourage employee's to stand up for their health.
