Drexel U. Study Looks At Why Some West Philly Neighborhoods Are Slow To Develop

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Drexel University released a new study that takes a look at some of the reasons arts and culture have been slow to revitalize Mantua and surrounding West Philadelphia neighborhoods.

Earlier this year, President Obama anointed Mantua a "Promise Zone."  Residents and community groups hoped it would mean more money for development in Mantua and nearby Powelton, but the area already has a strong arts community -- yet transformation has been slow.

Dr. Andrew Zitcer of Drexel University is one of the researchers who authored the study. He says Chinatown and Germantown thrived thanks to artist created hubs, but Powelton and Mantua need more of a push:

"It would be really wonderful if city agencies, philanthropists looked at what the potential is to develop these really wonderful cultural corridors of Lancaster Avenue, Haverford Avenues and Market Street by building capacity within existing resources."

Zitcer is hoping the study will get philanthropists and city agencies interested in investing more in the "Promise Zone."
