Dozens At Wayne Presbyterian Church Volunteer To Help The Hungry

WAYNE, Pa. (CBS) -- Nearly 60 members of the Wayne Presbyterian Church in Delaware County gathered Sunday afternoon to provide a special gift of food for those starving in countries around the world.
The volunteers spent more than two hours filling 10,000 food packets that will be sent to help starving families in 65 countries. Each packet contained soy, rice, vegetables and protein powder that will provide a meal for a family of six.
The Wayne volunteers, who donated the food and labor to fill the packets, are working with Stop Hunger Now, an international hunger relief agency that over the past 15 years has packaged and shipped more than 176 million meals to those starving around the world.
The 10,000 food packages, which have a shelf life of two years, will be shipped within the next three weeks to countries where food is needed, as part of a larger shipment of 300,000 meals from the Philadelphia area.
Volunteers carefully filled each plastic bag with food products, weighing and sealing them, before they were placed into cardboard boxes to be shipped.
