PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Dozens of car thefts recently in this cold weather have the Philadelphia Police Department issuing a warning: "Don't leave your unoccupied vehicle running with the keys in the ignition."

With the frigid temperatures many people tend to warm up their vehicle and run inside for a few minutes before driving off, but that could be a big mistake says Lt. John Stanford with the Philadelphia Police Department. He says it only takes a few seconds for a thief to jump in and steal your vehicle.

"Well our Major Crimes Auto Squad they have seen this taking place over the last month or so. There have been approximately 108 reports of individuals calling in regards to this situation. So we want to make sure that we put the word out, let people know there are people out there looking to take your vehicle if you leave it running with it unlocked or with the keys in the car."

Lt. Stanford also says don't leave vehicles running while running into a store.

"You're giving an opportunity to a thief to take that vehicle and possibly even take your kids."
