Dogs From Storm-ravaged Mississippi Now Available For Adoption In Philadelphia Area

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – The recent tornadoes in the southern part of the country have left a lot of people homeless.

They've also, however, left many animals with no place to go.

Now, some of those animals have arrived at shelters and rescue organizations in our area.

According to the International Fund for Animal Welfare, more than 80 dogs from the Tupelo-Lee Humane Society in hard-hit Tupelo, Mississippi were either transported or will be transported to shelters in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Washington, D.C.

Michael Booth, of the IFAW, says 53 of the pups traveled in a GreaterGood.org/Animal Rescue Site-supported truck and trailer earlier this week. Those dogs are now available for adoption at shelters near Philadelphia including Last Chance Ranch in Quakertown, PA; Lancaster SPCA in Lancaster, PA; Women's Humane Society in Bensalem, PA; Wet Nose Rescue in Feasterville, PA; and the Animal Alliance in Lambertville, NJ.

A second transport on May 13 will bring the rest of the animals to the New Jersey and D.C. area shelters.

The animals have been through a mandatory holding period, are all spayed or neutered, up-to-date on vaccinations, and ready to find forever homes. If you'd like to adopt one, please contact the shelter directly.
