Disabled Adults Learn Life Skills Through Baking

LOWER MERION, Pa. (CBS) – People with the "Baking A Difference" program bake challah every other week in the kitchen at Adath Israel Synagogue in Lower Merion.

"We make the challah here and then we sell it at the Federation Building," explains Or Ben-Ari, care manager at Jewish Family and Children Services.

He says most of the clients baking are on the autism spectrum and this program helps them learn life skills:

"How to get along with other co-workers, or how to make a sales pitch when they sell."

22-year-old Chelsea says she's learned a lot from baking and selling challah:

"Basic tips in the job service as well as people skills and just having something to do."

"Well, it's getting me out of the house," adds Joe. "I like to do this, I'm making some kind of money and it's always a good thing for the resume."

Money raised through selling challah goes towards hunger initiative programs.
