An 18-year-old man was charged in a hit-and-run that left a bicyclist in Deptford, New Jersey, dead Monday night.

Gloucester County Prosecutor Andrew B. Johns announced Tuesday that Iqrar Ahmad, of Deptford, allegedly struck a bicyclist on Delsea Drive and fled the scene. Ahmad was charged with one count of second-degree leaving the scene of a fatal accident, Johns said. The bicyclist hasn't been identified by officials.

Deptford Township Police responded to the crash just before 8:30 p.m. A caller told 911 that they struck a bicyclist with their vehicle, which caused the person to fall into the road, where they were hit by a second car. Johns said the second vehicle was driven by Ahmad.

According to Johns, a witness reported that Ahmad briefly stopped in Delsea Drive before leaving the area. He returned about two hours later, where he admitted he was in the vehicle that fled, Johns said.

Ahmad told police he saw a bicycle and another vehicle while driving on Delsea Drive, and that he felt his car strike an object. Johns said that Ahmad thought it was a rock or another large object and kept driving.

Ahmad allegedly told police he pulled over and noticed damage on the grille of his car, but he didn't realize what he had hit. He returned to the scene after speaking with a family member, Johns said.

Ahmad faces a maximum term of 10 years in state prison.
