Democratic Governor, GOP Lawmakers Far Apart On Pa. Budget

HARRISBURG, Pa. (CBS) -- As budget hearings continued in the state capitol this past week, Republicans who control the legislature battled officials of the Democratic Wolf Administration over the implications of the governor's far-reaching proposals to overhaul Pennsylvania taxes.
House Appropriations Chairman Bill Adolph, a Delaware County Republican, sparred with Wolf's budget secretary, Randy Albright, over the governor's proposal to raise income and sales taxes while lowering property taxes. Albright emphasized the property tax relief in the proposal.
"Every resident, no matter where they live, will receive significant amounts of school district property tax relief across the state."
But Adolph, using his district as an example, said the tax package must be viewed as a whole.
"Springfield Township residents – in my calculations, and I will gladly go over them with you – those residents will pay an additional $7.8 million in taxes. That's net."
The new fiscal year begins July first.
