Delco Homeless Families Get A Day of Escapist Fun

By Paul Kurtz

CHESTER, Pa. (CBS) -- A Delaware County agency that helps the homeless goes one step further this time each year by throwing an outdoor barbecue bash for parents and children.

A moonbounce and a waterslide were among the many activities being offered today to kids outside the Wesley House Homeless Shelter.

The Community Action Agency of Delaware County hosts the annual "June Jam," with a lot of help from volunteers such as Nicole Gilchrist.

"This is my community," she said today. "I love my neighbors, I love my neighborhood, although it is a little rough at the time. But you gotta help somebody somtime -- it's only right. Just because someone's in a shelter doesn't mean they don't need friends, you know what I mean?"

It's a day for parents to spend quality time with their kids.  Or, as one mother put it, "a chance to feel like a normal family."
