Delco Church Prepares 10,000 Meals To Help Stop Hunger

GLEN MILLS, Pa. (CBS) – Volunteers from a church in Delaware County came together Sunday to prepare thousands of nutritious meals that will ultimately help feed starving children all over the world.

A gong rang every time 1,000 meals were prepared as almost 200 adults and children from ValleyPoint Church in Glen Mills got to work at Garnet Valley Middle School.

The goal: prepare 10,000 meals in just one hour.

"We want to be the type of church that is actually helping the community and even helping those around the world," says pastor Eric Koehler.

The event was organized by "Stop Hunger Now" and the band "Willet" was also on hand.

Each meal costs just 29-cents to make and has a shelf life of two years. Volunteer David Peres says knowing the meal could be a lifeline for someone in dire straits gives volunteers a profound sense of responsibility:

"You see people's' realization, like sometimes, if a little bit of rice fell out, it might be okay, but you realize, that's a little less food that someone has, so we redid it to make sure there was enough for everyone."

This is the second year Peres and his family have pitched in.

"I think it's the teamwork, that that many people can work together who've never worked together on a project before, and yet feed 10,000 people," he says.

In the end, volunteers achieved their goal with time to spare -- it took just 40 minutes.
