Delco Caregiver Accused Of Stealing Over $10K From Elderly Woman

NETHER PROVIDENCE, Pa. (CBS) -- A Delaware County caregiver is being charged with stealing more than $10,000 from a 90-year-old woman she was hired to help.

Fifty-three-year-old Maureen Smith of Nether Providence is charged with theft, receiving stolen property, theft by deception and other crimes.

The Delaware County District Attorney says Smith had been hired four years ago as a companion for Tina Fright. In May, Smith was given Tina Fright's debit card to pay herself and buy items Fright would need.

An investigation began over the summer when Fright's power of attorney, Rosemary Lavin, noticed $10,000 withdrawn from Fright's account. Lavin asked Smith to return a debit card. Smith refused and continued to make withdrawals.

In August, Lavin cancelled the card and terminated Smith's employment.

Smith has been arraigned and released on $10,000 unsecured bail.
