Delaware Valley Road Crews Gearing Up For Thursday Snow Event

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The snow is not expected to start till tomorrow, but PennDOT crews have already started storm preparations.

Pennsylvania Department of Transportation spokesman Brad Rudolph says the first priority was spraying brine on the roads, "to minimize the impact of the snowfall predicted for Thursday morning. This way, not as much ice would form on the roadways, which gives our plow trucks a better chance of picking up the snow and salting the roadways."

If you're driving where PennDOT is plowing and salting, Rudolph says to make sure there are six car lengths between you and those trucks, which generally travel at 35 to 40 miles per hour.

And he warns not to give in to the urge to pass them.

"It's very dangerous," he warns.  "These equipment operators have a tremendous amount of responsibility. They have computers they're monitoring, they're spreading salt, they're keeping their eyes on traffic and obstacles."

And remember: they're doing all that to clear the way for you.
