Delaware State Police Investigating Trooper-Involved Shooting That Left 46-Year-Old Man Dead In Lewes
LEWES, Del. (AP) -- Police in Delaware are investigating a fatal shooting involving a State Trooper. Delaware State Troopers were called to the 300 block of E. Savannah Road to assist the Lewes Police Department in reference to a man armed with a handgun, threatening to commit suicide around 8:22 p.m. Friday.
A 46-year-old man was standing in the driveway holding a handgun and making suicidal statements.
Officers were able to get the man to place the handgun on the ground twice, but he proceeded to pick it up and refused to comply with multiple verbal commands from officials.
Police say he pointed the handgun at the State Troopers and Lewes Police Officers and a Trooper discharged his divisional issued patrol rifle, striking the suspect in the upper torso.
Officers immediately began medical treatment and transported the man to Beebe Hospital. He was later pronounced dead.
His identity has not been released at this time.
The Trooper involved in the shooting has been employed by the Delaware State Police for five years. He was placed on administrative leave.
An investigation is ongoing.
