Delaware school bus driver dies after crash involving 2 buses in Newark, state police say
A Delaware school bus driver died Thursday after a crash in a middle school parking lot, state police said.
A school bus was parked in the drop-off lane at Gauger-Cobbs Middle School in Newark Thursday morning. A second bus was parked behind it. That bus started to drift forward when the driver of the first bus was behind her bus to prepare for an emergency exit drill, according to state police.
Firefighters and EMS who were called to the school on Gender Road found the driver of the first bus unresponsive on the ground, fire officials said. She then went into cardiac arrest and was taken to the hospital.
The driver who was hit, a 54-year-old woman from Wilmington, was pronounced dead at the hospital. Police have not released her name.
The driver of the second bus, a 53-year-old woman from New Castle, was not injured. The buses had 48 students on board, and no students were hurt.
Delaware State Police are investigating the incident. The parking lot was closed for about four hours for investigation and cleanup.
