Delaware County Officials Honor Fallen Heroes, Including Policeman Who Died Last November

UPPER PROVIDENCE TOWNSHIP, Pa. (CBS) -- Delaware County's law enforcement community gathered today in Rose Tree Park, in Upper Providence, for the annual day of remembrance for fallen police officers.

This was the 17th year for the event, and it was marked by the addition of a new name for the memorial garden.

"Edward Wehe III," an announcer intoned, "Delaware County Courthouse and park police department, November 5, 2013."   Then, a bell pealed.

The fallen officer suffered a fatal heart attack after helping clear a protest scene at Delaware County Prison.

"Ed loved his job as a police officer, especially his assignment with Delaware County Children and Youth Services, where he served and protected Delaware County children and their families for 12 years," noted Delaware County district attorney Jack Whelan.

There are now 41 plaques honoring Delaware County officers at the memorial site.

"These names, these souls represent all of us -- citizens whose lives have been saved and fellow officers whose lives have been spared," said chaplain Perry Messick.
