Del. Man Arrested For 6th DUI After Vehicle Crash

HARRINGTON, Del. (CBS) – Police in Delaware say they arrested a Frederica man for his sixth DUI after a vehicle crash east of Harrington.

On Tuesday, April 29th around 5:12 p.m., police responded to a three car crash at the intersection of Milford-Harrington Highway (SR14) and Killens Pond Road.

The investigation revealed that Elsworth M. Smith III, 30, was operating a 1994 GMC Sierra pickup truck heading south on Killens Pond Road and came to a stop at the posted stop sign at the intersection with SR14.

Derrick L. Short, 23, of Selbyville, was driving a 2002 Dodge Durango eastbound on SR14 when Smith pulled out into the path of the Durango.

The two cars collided and the GMC continued southbound where it struck a 2000 Honda Civic operated by Robert B. Vincelette, 67, of Houston, who was stopped at the stop sign facing north on Deep Grass Road.

Elsworth Smith was taken by EMS from the scene and transported to Milford Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and released with non-life-threatening injuries.

Smith was also found to be under the influence and was charged with his sixth DUI offense, as well as two counts of Vehicular Assault 2nd, Driving While Suspended or Revoked, Failure to have Insurance in Possession, and Failure to Remain Stopped.

Police say Smith was then arraigned and committed to James T. Vaughn Correctional Center in lieu of $14,502 cash bond.

Short and Vincelette were both transported to Milford Memorial Hospital, where they were also treated and released.
