PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- There is no doubt we face a great deal of stress in our lives and many of my patients say it is getting worse. But there are steps you can take to help. The first it to ask for help.

Prepare a list of some weekly tasks you need done and ask family members or friends to choose one or two. Tasks could include taking your loved one for a walk, picking up medicines, or preparing a meal. Another is getting exercise. It is one of the best things you can do for yourself as a caregiver. Not only can exercise reduce stress, tension and depression, but it can also improve your sleep and increase your energy. Walking is one easy way to get moving. Start by walking for 15 to 20 minutes a few times a week.

Finally, whatever the cause of stress, taking care of yourself is one of the first rules of caregiving—when you feel good, you can give better care. Find time each week to do at least one thing that's just for you. It could be going to a movie or out to dinner, or simply reading a good book.
