Deadline For Getting Health Insurance Through Affordable Care Act Nearing

By Pat Loeb

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The enrollment deadline for getting insurance this year through the Affordable Care Act is one month away, and today is the deadline for getting coverage that begins in February.

Federal health officials say 409,000 Pennsylvanians and 203,000 New Jerseyans signed up by last month. Eighty-percent of them were eligible for subsidies to bring the cost down.

Independence Blue Cross -- the largest insurer in the region -- says most of its subscribers signing up through the marketplace are return customers.

Officials have emphasized the importance of going online to re-enroll, even if you signed up last year, because there are more plans available and the costs may have changed for current plans.

The enrollment period is shorter this year than last. Sign up ends February 15th, but those who sign up by today will be insured beginning February 1st.
