'Day Of Empowerment' Helps Low-Income Men Find Career Opportunities

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- An event to reduce employment barriers for low-income men was held in Center City on Tuesday.

One of the topics at the "Day of Empowerment" event was all about the attitude, ways to increase confidence levels of participants, many of whom have been incarcerated, are unemployed or on welfare.

The event was organized by UnitedHealthcare and MenzFit, a nonprofit founded by Rhonda Willingham.

"Our mission is that we change lives, families and communities," Willingham said, "and we do that by providing professional interviewing clothing, career development services, financial literacy services and we partner with about 85 other nonprofits in the area who actually refer the clients to us when they are job ready.

Twenty-seven-year-old Nathaniel Herron of Germantown wants to transition back to the work world.

"It's the willingness, like willing to change. You have to want it," he said. "Even putting on a suit, you automatically feel different, your transition begins immediately.

There were workshops on improving interview skills and the importance of healthy living.
