By Mark Abrams and Todd Quinones

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- PECO has managed to restore power to most of the 4,000 customers affected by outages caused by fires and failures in underground transformers late Tuesday afternoon in Center City.

A PECO spokesman says only a handful customers are still impacted and they are bringing in generators to restore their power.

The first transformer problem developed in an underground unit near 13th and Spruce streets and is affecting power to the Milestone high-rise.

PECO says another problem developed a short time later a few blocks away at an underground transformer in the area of 15th and Waverly streets..

There are no reports of injuries.

Because of the outages, Peirce College has cancelled evening classes and administration offices are closed.

PECO expects everyone to have their power back by 1 a.m. Wednesday. The cause of the power outages remains under investigation.
