Crews Preparing For New Year's Eve Fireworks Shows

PHILADLEPHIA (CBS) – Crews at the Navy Yard today will finish loading shells onto barges, for the New Year's Eve fireworks shows at Penn's Landing.
It's a labor-intensive, three day job, loading 5,000 shells into mortar tubes and wiring them to a computerized controller. The two loaded barges will float their way into position on New Year's Eve for the 6 p.m. "Star Wars" and midnight classical-themed shows. Show producer Ken Furstoss of the firm Pyrotecnico says in addition to the chrysanthemums, red rings and willows, there are a few new twists.
"We've had some new designs. We're calling them 'Lollipops.' I think they'll be very spectacular. They're right off the water and the effect is down there. So you'll see several shots of those on both shows."
And KYW Newsradio will broadcast the synchronized soundtracks for the 6 p.m. and midnight shows.
