Coronavirus Latest: Philadelphia Mills Mall Closes After Initially Defying City's Order To Shut Down Nonessential Businesses

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Philadelphia Mills mall in Northeast Philly closed at 7 p.m. Wednesday after the city asked the police department to shut it down. The mall remained open despite a city order that nonessential businesses need to shut down by Monday to help stop the spread of COVID-19.

City officials criticized the mall Wednesday afternoon.

"I'm disappointed by the inability and irresponsibility and as such, we have sent the police department and L&I to shut down that business," Philadelphia Managing Director Brian Abernathy said.

The mall's parent company, Simon, closed all of its malls nationwide Wednesday night.
