Corbett Opposes Proposal To Allow Universities To Pull Out Of State System

HARRISBURG, Pa. (CBS) - Governor Corbett has come out against proposed legislation to allow schools like West Chester to pull out of the system of state-owned universities.
Two suburban Philadelphia state senators unveiled the legislation this week that would allow the larger state-owned universities to become state-related schools like Temple and Pittsburgh. One of the sponsors, Bucks County Republican Tommy Tomlinson, says the state system limits the ability of growing schools like West Chester to make decisions that best meet their needs.
But spokesman Jay Pagni says Governor Corbett is concerned about the impact such a change would have and he wants to give the state system's new chancellor Frank Brogan a chance to make changes.
"We have a vibrant, innovative chancellor who is looking to transform the state system. He became chancellor in fall."
But Pagni says the governor appreciates the issues raised by the legislation, which can begin a discussion about those issues.
