Teen Boy Shot Multiple Times At Wilmington Bus Stop On Way To School

WILMINGTON, Del. (CBS) -- Wilmington authorities are investigating the shooting of a 15-year-old boy at a bus stop Monday morning.

Police responded to the area of West 27th and North Vanburen Streets around 6:49 a.m. Monday for reports of shots fired.

A bus company spokesperson told CBS 3's Anita Oh that all of the students got on the bus following the shooting, then shortly after notified the driver when they realized one of them had been shot.

The 15-year-old victim, who is a ninth-grade student at John Dickinson High School, suffered from gunshot wounds to his left arm and abdominal areas.

"He has a good record at the school and he's well-known by staff," said school district spokeswoman Pati Nash. "Everyone is pulling for him today."

Eyewitnesses described seeing at least one shooter with a white mask opening fire, before fleeing.

The teen was treated on scene by New Castle Paramedics and taken to A.I. DuPont Children's Hospital where he is listed in stable condition.

A neighbor describes seeing panicked students scrambling to get on the bus or run for cover.

"It was total chaos. When we looked out of the window we saw some kids running this way, we saw some kids jump on the bus. The bus driver was telling the kids get on the bus for protection," said Ira Findley.

Juanita Matthews said more needs to be done to protect students.

"We had concerns about student safety, so we finally have stop signs put up. Unfortunately, a stop sign won't stop a bullet," said Matthews.

As a result of this incident, school district officials plan to launch a program called Corner-To-Corner on Tuesday, instead of next year.

"This is going to be adults walking students to their bus stops in the mornings throughout the city," said Nash.

No word on a motive or a suspect.

Anyone with information on the shooting is urged to contact police.
