PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Police are investigating a fatal accident that occurred overnight in North Philadelphia.

Authorities say the driver was taken into custody under suspicion of DUI.

Officers responded to the scene around 1:43 a.m. Thursday after observing a white BMW in a center median with a shattered windshield, heavy damage and smoke coming from the engine.

As police were investigating, a male walked up behind them and said that he struck an animal.

Police say officers were surveying the area when they noticed what appeared to be blood on the hood of the vehicle.

Officers walked northbound on Roberts Avenue to determine what the male had struck, and they came across an unknown black male on the sidewalk. Police say he was laying on his back and was bleeding from his head.

Medics responded to the scene and pronounced the male dead at 2:02 a.m.

Police say the driver was then placed into custody for  suspicion of DUI. He was taken to Temple Hospital for treatment for a cut to his hand and facial injuries due to airbag deployment.
