Cool Weather Extends Spring Show

By Phran Novelli

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - It almost looks like snow, but it's just flower showers!

The past few weeks as trees have been blooming, our cooler-than-usual start to spring helped ensure that the blossoms lasted longer than just a day or two. If it gets too hot in early spring, the show can often be over very quickly, the flowers open, wilt and drop in no time.

On the other hand, when we get a late freeze with blossoms on the trees, the flowers can turn brown and drop overnight. That kind of late cold snap can even destroy entire crops as late-spring freezes did to many fruit trees two years ago.

But in a year like this, when we get cooler, sunny days and long-lasting blooms to enjoy - pink, white, red, purple and other colors - against the background of a blue sky, it's just beautiful. Then later, after a couple of weeks of enjoying them on the trees, when a breeze kicks up, the flowers finally get caught up in it, dance around in the air, then tumble down to lay a lovely carpet of pretty petals beneath each tree.

Go take a look and enjoy the freshly-fallen petals near you before they disappear.
