Computer Glitch Voids 17K Red Light Tickets In NJ

By David Madden

TRENTON, N.J. (CBS) - If you got a red light camera ticket in New Jersey you might not have to pay it. Blame a computer glitch for a move to clear 17,000 tickets issued over a one month period.

American Traffic Solutions, which runs the service for 17 towns, failed to send out tickets in a timely fashion. That runs afoul of state law, according to Winnie Comfort, a spokeswoman for the state judiciary:

"A notice must be sent to the driver within 90 days of the occurrence and, if that does not happen, that ticket must under the law be dismissed."

The offenses cover a period from May 28th through June 30th. Most of those tickets were written in North Jersey, but letters have gone out to Glassboro, Monroe Township, Gloucester Township and Deptford asking municipal judges to throw out a total of over 2,800 tickets.
