Mayor Kenney Weighs In On Philly Jobs Moving To Mexico

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Mayor Jim Kenney admits it's difficult to keep jobs in Philadelphia when companies choose to move them south of the border.

Word that Cardone Industries was laying off 1,300 workers stung Mayor Kenney.

"It's hard to compete with Mexico," said Kenney.

Cardone is transferring the jobs from its brake caliper manufacturing facilities in Northeast Philadelphia to its plant in Matamoros, Mexico over the next two years.

"When it comes to wages and working conditions and benefits, probably they're getting very little if any down there. And that's a decision that they make economically and I don't know how we compete with that," said Kenney.

Cardone's headquarters office will remain in Philadelphia.

Kenney says his goal remains attracting new manufacturing business to the city. But he says early in his administration, these jobs got away.
