Community Partners With Local Police District To Provide Free Back-To-School Haircuts

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- In Point Breeze 17th District, police officers have wrapped up a two day special giveaway for neighborhood children.

A group of 17th district police officers were hanging outside Unisex Hair Design on South 17th Street, while a nearby neighbor with a bullhorn delivered the clear call for parents to take their kids to the barber shop for a free haircut.

Inside the shop, it was only happy customers.

Hassan Williams was finishing up with a quiet, wide eyed 7-year-old boy.

"We feel as though we have to unite the community with the police department because all of the violence that's going on in the neighborhood," Williams said.

Williams teamed up with officer James Lippi, a familiar face in the community.

"About 5-6 years ago we did it," he said. "And it kinda fell through the cracks. Then, with everything going on with the police and communities and all, lets try to bring it back again."

The 17th District picked up the tab for the haircuts and also gave out backpacks to the kids...just in time for the start of school.
