Comedian Godfrey: The Gay Community Has Racists, Too

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Comedian Godfrey told Talk Radio 1210 WPHT morning host Chris Stigall that he believes there is racism within the gay community.

"The gays, especially white male gays—who actually have a lot of power, it's the minority gays that no one cares about (George) Carlin even said that. Here's the cool thing about being a white gay male, you can hide that you're gay, get all of your money, and then come out once you get all of your bank accounts. See, when you're black you're just black, you're judged by that. It doesn't even matter if you're gay or not. There's actually racism in the gay community."

Godfrey feels that racism has been prevalent in the gay community for years, from J. Edgar Hoover to KKK clansmen to just wealthy gay men.

"Well, because you're judged by your exterior. There's white gays that still discriminate against minorities because of them being black or Asian or whatever. It's the truth…You would think it wouldn't happen, because I know black gays that get discriminated against."

He tells a story of his female cousin, who was a model, being turned down by gay men at modeling agencies, with those men saying, "We already have a black one."

While some of his gay friends feel that the struggle that gay people go through is "just like being black", Godfrey disagrees.

"Discrimination is horrible in the first place. I don't think that anybody should be discriminated against, but I think their struggle is a tad bit different. I don't know because I'm not gay, but I know—it's not the same. It's different. It's kind of different. There are some similarities, but I just personally think, as far as being black, you're just judged by what you look like."
