Comcast Hints New Cell Phone Services At New York Conference

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Comcast doesn't just want to be your cable and Internet provider: it also has designs on becoming your cell phone company. On Tuesday the new plans were  teased by Comcast's CEO at a Goldman Sachs conference in New York.

Brian Roberts said it's all about building.

"We think it's value-adding to our customers," he said.

Brian Roberts said by the middle of next year they'll launch Comcast Wireless.

"We've got 28 million customers, and well over 70-80% buy a multi-package bundle from us," he said. "We can sell them more products."

In this case, the Philly company would leverage a deal it made early this decade with Verizon Wireless. Calls, texts, and data would ride on Comcast's 15 million hotspots, or would hop onto the Verizon signal if WiFi isn't in range. All at what bill-payers would hope is a very competitive price.

"There's a lot to do. We have retail locations, we have many customer interaction points. We want to do it right and do it well."
