Coast Guard Rescues Two Boaters Near Lewes

LEWES, De. (CBS) -- Two people, stranded in a sail boat, were rescued by the Coast Guard on Thursday. The rescue took place near Lewes around 1:00 a.m.

Officials say a boated was on a 40-foot sailboat and notified the Coast Guard that they ran aground about 500 yards off the shore. Both boaters were wearing their life vests at the time.

A Coast Guard boat crew and rescue helicopter was sent out from Air Station Atlantic City. First responders in the area assisted with the rescue effort.

A rescue swimmer came down from the helicopter and helped the boaters make it to the shore where they were helped by the Lewes Fire Department. No one was injured.

Officials made it clear that the incident was an example of how life jackets can save lives.
