Co-Working Space, For Women Only, Prepares to Open in Old City

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A local entrepreneur is opening a shared workspace, called a "co-working" space, in Old City. And it will be for women only.
The space will be located at 222-B Race Street. Melissa Alam, the owner, is naming it The Hive.
She says she too will be working in the space -- as editor-in-chief of her online magazine, Femme & Fortune.
"The Hive started because I needed a workspace as well," Alam tells KYW Newsradio. "I have been freelancing and owning my own business for the past two years, and I got tired of working in my apartment or different coffee shops."
What's the difference between an all-female co-working space and one that's co-ed?
"I think there's maybe less intimidation, in a way," she says. "A lot of these co-working spaces around the country are mostly co-ed. A dedicated female workspace provides more attention to these female entrepreneurs from each other. It's a new market that hasn't been touched, especially in Philadelphia."
The Hive is expected to open next month.
"Memberships will start at about $100, and that will get you five days a month to work there. It will go up to $450 if you want a dedicated desk. So, if you have a desktop computer, if you want to leave your stuff there every day, we'll have space for that as well," she explains.
