City Holds Free Economic Empowerment Conference

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- City Officials are holding an economic empowerment conference today at the Community College of Philadelphia.

"Those jobs that were available in the past, may not necessarily be available," said Philadelphia City Council President Darrell Clarke.

Clarke is one of the city officials behind, "How to Make it in America" Economic Empowerment Conference, a free all day event that teaches residents how to retool in a changing economy by starting their own business.

Council members will moderate panels of business leaders, like Donna Ali whose business has skyrocketed.

She created a company cleaning offices and got a small contract. Today, she is one of the largest employers in the region.

The conference will include government officials who will explain the contract procurement process, as well as the funding and other resources available to help businesses launch and grow.

"There's a lot out there for people to access."

The free event runs until 4 p.m. today.
