Circumcision May Be A Financial Decision

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - We don't talk about circumcision that often in health reports but the Mayo Clinic has released some interesting information about the procedure, which has both medical and religious ties.

Back in the 1960's, 83% of American baby boys were circumcised. That number is now 77%.

There are health implications - circumcision in infancy protects against urinary tract infections that can damage the kidney in half of babies who get infected.

Why fewer circumcisions? The decrease was mainly due to demographic changes. For instance, Hispanic families are less likely to circumcise because of financial issues.

In areas without Medicaid coverage, the circumcision rate is 24% lower.
