Child Thanks Police With Lunch For 'Kindness Day,' Becomes Honorary Officer

WINSLOW TOWNSHIP, N.J. (CBS) -- 5-year-old William Evertz decided with his family to make this "Kindness Day."

William's been doing chores and earning money so he can help other people.

"We watched a video of someone helping the homeless and next thing you know it kind of took off," says his mother Tara Evertz.

He started "Kindness Day" by dropping off lunch to his heroes at the Winslow Township Police Department.

"Cause they keep us safe," William explained when asked about his fondness for police.

After lunch William planned to drop off toys and school supplies to kids at a domestic violence shelter, food to the animal shelter and giving a less fortunate family 25 dollars from his allowance to help with daycare.

For his kind the police department made him an honorary police officer with a badge and bag of goodies.

"He wants to help people, he likes being kind. When we all signed up for this job that was our thing – we want to help people and I think he's going to do a good job," says Lt. Chris Dubler.
