Chester County Residents Warned About Phone Scam Involving Jury Duty

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Chester County Sheriff's office is warning residents not to fall victim to the latest phone scam.

Chester County Sheriff Bunny Welsh says some residents have received calls claiming the resident needs to pay a fine for missing jury duty. She says the scam even involves caller ID showing the call coming from the sheriff's office.

But, Welsh says, the county does not work that way.

"Any call from the sheriff's office demanding payment, of any kind, for anything, whether it's jury duty, sometimes the scam can be unpaid tickets, or perhaps a claim that they know nothing of. But citizens need to understand that at no time will the sheriff's office call and demand someone pay a fine over the phone."

If residents do receive such a call, Welsh says they should immediately call local police or the sheriff's department.
