Cheltenham Township Police Officer Hit By Car At Accident Scene

WYNCOTE, Pa. (CBS) -- A Cheltenham Township Police officer is hospitalized after a passing vehicle spun on ice and struck him as he placed road flares at an accident scene.

The incident happened at about 6:20 a.m. Thursday on Washington Lane in the Wyncote section of Cheltenham Township.

According to investigators, officers from the Cheltenham Township Police Department responded to a 911 call reporting a vehicle crash.

While assisting the drivers involved in the crash, Officer Phil Degliomini began to place road flares in the area to warn other drivers.

At the same time, a driver heading northbound on Washington Lane lost control of his vehicle on the icy roadway and began to spin.

The car struck the officer placing the flares and threw him to the side of the road.

Officer Degliomini was taken to Abington Memorial Hospital with internal injuries. He is listed in stable condition with multiple injuries.

The driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators. The incident remains under investigation.

Police say Officer Degliomini is 50-years-old and a seven-year veteran of the Cheltenham Police Department after spending 18 years with the Philadelphia Police Department.
