Charges Filed Against Bartram H.S. Student After Staffer Knocked Cold

By Mike DeNardo

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A staffer at Bartam High School is recovering after he was knocked unconscious in an altercation with a student.

The aftermath of the assault was captured on a student's cell phone and posted online.

Alphonso Stevens, a "climate manager" (conflict resolution specialist) at Bartam High, suffered a concussion last Friday when his head was pushed into a concrete wall.

"It's the worst assault that I've heard on a school employee since the unfortunate incident at Germantown High School," says Philadelphia Federation of Teachers' president Jerry Jordan.

Jordan was referring to an incident in 2007 in which teacher Frank Burd was punched, fell, and broke his neck.

Jordan says two other Bartram teachers were assaulted in the last week. He says Bartram has seen a number of fights this school year, and he says staff cuts have left few adults there to supervise.

A 17-year-old student was suspended and faces charges in connection with the latest incident.
