Central Pa. Man Dies When Kayak Overturns

WESTOVER, Pa. (AP) — State police say a 48-year-old man has died after his kayak overturned in the icy waters of the Susquehanna River in central Pennsylvania.

Troopers from the Punxsutawney barracks say the victim is Edward Heberling Jr., of Westover.

Heberling was kayaking with a relative in Burnside Township, Clearfield County, when his craft capsized, dumping him into the fast-moving water.

The river was partially covered by ice, so crews could not find Heberling in the area where he went into the water about 11 a.m. Saturday.

Instead, his body was recovered about 45 minutes later, some 100 yards downstream.

Heberling was taken to Conemaugh Memorial Hospital in Johnstown where doctors couldn't revive him.
