Center City Wall Now Stands To Honor Phillies History

By Mike DeNardo

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Some of the greatest names in Phillies history, including Mike Schmidt, Dick Allen and Jim Bunning, are gathering on the Walnut Street Bridge today for the dedication of the Phillies mural.

The mural above the CSX tracks, delayed for years by safety and legal issues, is now finished.

The wall at 24th and Walnut includes 30 Phillies icons from Chuck Klein and Grover Cleveland Alexander to Schmitty, Lefty, The Wild Thing, J Roll, and Harry and Whitey. Artist and Phillies fan David McShane has done more than 70 murals, but he says this is among his favorites.

"To be able to do a project like this that features my favorite team with my favorite subject matter and do the whole history, it was really exciting and then, of course, it's such a visible wall here in Center City, eight stories tall. It's a really great thing."

McShane says he hopes people will look at the mural and remember how the city came together to share the Phils' triumphs and failures over the years.
