Cellphones Not The Only Cause Of Distracted Driving

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - What's a distraction affected accident? A common occurrence.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there were 3,328 people killed and 421,000 injured nationwide in so-called distraction-affected crashes in 2012, the most recent year for which data is available. In response, last month states across the country started cracking down on distracted driving.

California, Nevada, Kentucky, and New Jersey - to name a few - have begun targeting so-called distracted drivers. But this is what surprises many: police are ticketing those drivers most people think of as distracted drivers - people using cell phones and texting while driving and those checking laptops and tablets and even watching movies. Those are bad drivers.

But you know who else falls into the distracted driving category? Probably you if you are driving while eating or drinking (even non-alcoholic beverages), or even putting on makeup.

Who knew putting on makeup while driving is illegal in New Jersey? Or elsewhere? And it is.

Remember: if you'd be afraid to see your teenager driving and doing those things you shouldn't be either. Eyes on the road, or the eyes of the cops will be on you.
