Month-Long Celebration Of Art, Culture In Philadelphia Begins

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Philadelphia's Mural Arts month is now underway.

The festivities kicked off Friday night with music blasting, beers flowing and artists even doing live demonstrations on the dreary night in South Philly

"Even though the weather is not cooperating, the spirit here is terrific," says Jane Golden -- executive director of the Philadelphia Mural Arts program.

She says this is the ideal event for this city:

"Philadelphia is a city that absolutely embraces arts and culture and community and mural arts is an example of that."

The event also celebrated the Murals at Swanson Walk in Snyder Plaza, one of them created by Joe Boruchow.

"It's designed to mimic the view from under 95," he says. "And it has all kinds of hieroglyphic characters doing fun things.

Golden adds these murals are the beginning of what she calls a "mini museum" in that area.
