Medal Of Honor Recipients At Andy's Diner In Conshohocken

By Dom Giordano

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- I often get to interview and sometimes meet some of the biggest names in the country in the fields of politics, pop culture and sports. These people pale in comparison to the guests I'm bringing to Andy's Diner in Conshy on 4/14 at 9:30. We'll have four Medal of Honor recipients join us; there are only 79 living Medal of Honor recipients.

Of course, the Medal of Honor is the highest award for valor in action against an enemy force. Three of the recipients were honored for their actions during the Vietnam War. Hershel "Woody" Williams, the fourth recipient, was awarded the honor for his actions on Iwo Jima on February 23, 1945.

His citation reads "Quick to volunteer his services when our tanks were maneuvering vainly to open a lane for the infantry through the network of reinforced concrete pillboxes, buried mines and black, volcanic sands, Corporal Williams daringly went forward alone to attempt the reduction of devastating machine-gun fire from the unyielding positions...On one occasion he daringly mounted a pillbox to insert the nozzle of his flame thrower through the air vent, kill the occupants and silence the gun; on another he grimly charged enemy riflemen who attempted to stop him with bayonets and destroyed them with a burst from his weapon."

We often talk about many of the negatives in the country today, but people like this are living inspirations. I'm calling it "A Gathering of Heroes." Join me this coming Tuesday at Andy's. You'll feel it.
