CBS News Reports World Breaks Global Heat Record -- Again
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Well, this is a little frightening.
CBS News is reporting that the world broke a global heat record for the second month in a row.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), June's average global temperature was 61.2 degrees, which is 1.3 degrees higher than the 20th century average and also beats 2010's record by one-twentieth of a degree.
Furthermore, the world's oceans were the hottest EVER recorded, regardless of the month.
All 12 of the world's heat records have been set post-1997, with more than half occurring over the last 10 years.
"This is what global warming looks like," University of Arizona climate scientist Jonathan Overpeck said in an email to CBS News. "Not record hot everywhere all the time, but certainly a reflection that the odds of record hot are going up everywhere around the planet."
