PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- If you're thinking about adopting a pet there are several things to consider before making the decision.

First, prospective pet owners must determine if they are fully ready to bring a new pet into their home and need to think of it as a lifelong commitment.

Second, pet owners need to consider the other pets in the house and whether the new addition will get along with them and vice versa.

And it's not just the other house pets that may need time to adjust -- the owners themselves often may need to change some of their behaviors when bringing a new dog or cat into their home.
