Car Slams Through Firehouse In Northeast Philly

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – One person was injured early Friday morning when a car slammed into a firehouse in the Wissinoming section of Philadelphia.

It happened just before 2 a.m. at the Engine 52 station near the intersection of Harbison and Van Kirk.

Accident investigators say the driver lost control and crashed through a closed garage door, then slammed into a brand new medic unit, knocking it into lockers.

The driver escaped the car out of the back seat and was taken to the hospital with some cuts to his face.

"He self-extracted from the car. The firefighters of course heard the noise, came to his assistance," says fire chief Charles LePre.

No other injuries were reported. There's no word yet how badly the ambulance is damaged.

The cause of the crash is unknown at this time, although investigators say early indications are the driver fell asleep at the wheel.
