Can Philadelphia Lure More Industries To City Using Unused Land?

By Mike Dunn

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Decades after most industries left Philadelphia, City Council plans to look at how unused land might coax them back.

Even if much of Philadelphia-based industries have left the city, there still remain thousands of acres of land -- much of it unused -- that is zoned industrial.

Councilman Bobby Henon plans a hearing on how to leverage that land to lure industries back:

"This is a resolution to have hearings to take a look at what land we have, and what opportunities to preserve a part of that land.  Its 2014 industrial land that we're trying to preserve.  And we're trying to use it as a marketing tool to attract businesses to the city."

The City Planning Commission believes there are in fact 1,600 acres of land zoned for industrial use and it recommends an inventory of the land as a first step.
